Description
Yellow Hibiscus Stamen And Pistil by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Week Four of the 52 week Art Challenge: The World Outside.
This yellow hibiscus bloom was photographed in the early morning resulting in a shadow of the reproductive components on one of the petals.
The Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. These large shrubs with showy colorful flowers are also called the Rose Mallow. They are considered perfect or complete flowers because they contain both male and female components.
The long tube called a Style projects out from the ovary that is out of view in this image. The small projections off of the style are called filaments. The small cashew shaped objects on the ends of the filaments are anthems and are full of pollen.
The Style branches out into five narrower tubes at the farthest end. The orange hairy discs on the end of the style are called Stigmas.
Each ovary contains five chambers and can produce five seeds.
This particular Hibiscus was blooming in Northwestern Alabama (USA) on the first full day of autumn.
