Hibiscus External Reproductive Components by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken for Week Three of the 52 week Personal Art Challenge (The World Outside).
This photograph shows the external reproductive organs of a Hibiscus flower, a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. These large shrubs with showy colorful flowers are also called the Rose Mallow.
These flowers are considered perfect flowers or complete flowers because they contain both male and female components.
As this red bloom opened, a long tube which is the Style, grew out from the Ovary that is inside the blossom and out of sight in this view.
You can now see the pink stems called Filaments protruding out from the Style with the yellow, pollen filled Anthers on the ends of the Filaments.
Notice how the Style branches out into five narrower tubes at the farthest end. The round deep red ends are called Stigmas. The Style extensions that hold the Stigmas on the far end have tiny hair like projections along their short lengths.
The ovary, stigma and style make up the female components known as the Pistil and the anthers and filaments make up the male components known as the Stamen.
Each ovary contains five chambers and can produce five seeds.
This particular Hibiscus was blooming in Northwestern Alabama (USA) three days before the end of summer and start of autumn.
