Description
Bay Of St. Louis Railroad Bridge by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 120 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
The railroad bridge that carries rail traffic over the Bay of St. Louis in Mississippi between Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian is a swing bridge. A swing bridge has a turntable over the deepest point of a waterway's channel which turns to open a section of the bridge to allow for marine traffic that is too tall to pass under the bridge. This would include sailboats with tall masts and barges that are carrying cranes or other tall construction equipment.
Vertical clearance under the bridge when closed is 13 ft. The bridge opens at the swing section on signal and will be opened on request unless there is rail traffic due to travel over the bridge at that time. Boaters can use a VHF radio or telephone to contact the Bridge Master/Tender and request an open bridge if they need more than a 13 foot clearance.
The design of this bridge is a Swing Warren through truss.
The deck and rails on this bridge were heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but the supporting piers survived and provided a base for the new deck and rails.

Thanks Tatiana! I took this one with my first digital camera that was only 2.1MP and taken from a moving bass boat!
