Description
Red Theatre Door by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph of the entrance door to the Bay Saint Louis Little Theatre in Bay Saint Louis, MS.
There is as much history in the building as in the community theater group which was started in 1946. This particular building was purchased and completely renovated after Hurricane Katrina destroyed the original structure across town in 2005.
The present building was originally built in 1920 as a grocery store with the owner's residence in the second story, and then served as a bottling plant for a New Orleans soft drink company.
In 1965 the building was used as a Hollywood set for the movie This Property Is Condemned starring Natalie Wood and Robert Redford. The building was portrayed as The Starr Boarding House. It then sat empty for 40 years.
The original Little Theatre building had been painted red and the door to this building was painted red as a reminder of the creative energy and effort that is in the Theatre history since 1946.
According to the Theatre's web site: The Bay St. Louis Little Theatre is an official Mississippi Landmark. Since its Grand Opening in 2010, it has been awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence (the first and only community theater to be selected for this award), the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce Award for Community Excellence (by unanimous vote), the Bay St. Louis Historic Preservation Commission “People’s Choice Award”, the Bay St. Louis Historic Preservation Commission “Heritage Award”, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History “Mississippi Heritage and Trust Award.”
