Description
Hancock County Mississippi was ground zero for Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Nearly 70,000 homes were destroyed along the Mississippi coast.
These before and after photographs were taken at a home in Bay Saint Louis, MS. The pre-Katrina house was a "round" house that was supposed to be hurricane resistant if not hurricane proof. Cyclonic winds tore the house apart, piece by piece and blew it into several debris fields, downwind of the storm. Several hours later the storm surge overfilled the Bay of Saint Louis, flooding the property. When the water receded, everything was covered with a thick, sticky, stinky marsh type mud.
The after photograph was taken three days after Katrina and the owners were the first people to check on their property. The Nation Guard came to the property the next day and marked a big X on the surviving concrete base to indicate that no bodies had been found on that property.
