Description
Two Crane Lattice Booms by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 288 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022). This is a vertical format image.
The cranes shown in this image are Lattice Boom Crawler Cranes. Lattice meaning the crisscrossing metal on the boom (arm) and crawler because they are mounted on tracks, similar to what you see on tanks and other construction equipment that need to traverse rough or uneven terrain.
The red lattice boom crane was manufactured by the Manitowoc company. The company, founded in 1902, was known as a shipbuilding originally, and built 28 submarines for the US Department of the Navy. In 1925 the company entered the lattice-boom crane business and has remained at the top of the lifting world for a century.
This image was taken along the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2007 two years after bridges along the coast were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.
