Description
Early Morning On Court Street by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken in the Historic Area Of Downtown Florence, Alabama. This view is of the west side of the street, looking north.
Part of the Historic Downtown District, Court Street is deserted in the early morning hours of a Sunday in April. Some of these buildings date back to the city's early beginnings in the nineteenth century.
Although Florence was established in 1818 it wasn't incorporated until 1826.
The city was formed from land owned by the Cypress Land Company, surveyed by Italian engineer Ferdinand Sannoner and named after Sannoner's hometown in Italy.
The location was chosen in anticipation of the city becoming a major commercial center because it was on a hill overlooking The Tennessee River.
Court Street was one of the streets in the original layout of Florence and is the street on which government buildings are located.
