Description
Winner by Kathy K. McClellan is an image created for Day 73 of the Journal 2022 Challenge.
My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries. As March is Women's History Month (since 1987), several of my posts this month will be celebrating women in history
On this day (March 14th) in 1993 The Worlds Ladies' Figure Skating Championship in Prague was won by Ukraninian Oksana Baiul. Skating since the age of 4 and orphaned at the age of 13, Oksana was winning championships by age 7. Her life may have been a series of hardships but she overcame every one of them and went on to win many competitions.
In 1993 she not only won the World's Skating Championships but also the Ukrainian National Championship.
At the age of 16 she competed in and won the Gold at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Baiul is the first and only skater representing Ukraine to win gold at the Winter Olympics. She is also the first Olympic champion of independent Ukraine in any sport.
After winning the Olympics she moved to the United States where she became, not only a professional skater but also a film & TV actress, designer, author, spokesperson and philanthropist.
She has been called The Empress Of Ice.
