My journal entries for March make up a series titled "From Letters to Words" using the letters that were created for the February entries. As March is Women's History Month (since 1987), several of my posts this month will be celebrating women in history.
Today's post is to honor three women who contributed to the advancement of women in government.
Jeannette Rankin was the first woman to hold Federal Office in the United States. She was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1916 and again in 1940. Jeannette was the only member of Congress to vote against both world wars and worked tirelessly for women's issues, including the right to vote in all states.
Frances Perkins was the first woman to serve in any presidential U.S. Cabinet. She served as the US Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945. She was college educated with a Master's degree, rare for women of her time, and held several positions within New York's state government. There she was an advocate for American workers. Her passion arose from witnessing the deaths of 146 people, mostly women, in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City.
Elizabeth Wood was the first Executive Director of the Chicago Housing Authority from 1937 until 1954. She held several college degrees including a Master's Degree. In addition to her position as Executive Director of the Chicago Housing Authority she held several other civic positions during her career including the Executive Director of Metropolitan Housing Council, she served on the Illinois State Housing Board, she worked for the City Housing Authority and the Citizens Housing and Planning Council in New York City and also served as an advisor at the Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Johnson and Nixon Administrations.
These are three examples out of many for us to remember and honor as trail blazers for women in government.
