Description
Island Tree Spirits is a compilation of photographs of wood carvings on oak trees on St. Simons Island, GA (USA).
Woodworker Keith Jennings started the project in the early 1980s and at the time of these photographs there were over 20 such carvings around the island.
Tree Spirits are also called Wood Spirits, Wood Dryads, Tree Trolls and other names. They are powerful characters who have enjoyed a long and noble history in tales from Greek mythology to folklore in almost every culture on earth.
The Tree Spirit is said to be Lord of the Forest and all things natural.

I love that they are carved into the tree and therefore here for us all to experience!
Kathy K McClellan replied:
They are also "alive". I photographed one that the tree had grown over all but the nose area of the face. It was as though "the spirit" was trying to hide as the shopping center and it's noisy activity grew around it! And another was hidden by other plant growth as buildings were being built around that one, too.
