Description
Melon Patch John Deere by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 279 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
This old John Deere tractor was parked near the entrance to Mark's Melon Patch, a few miles out of Sasser, Georgia (USA).
John Deere, a blacksmith by trade, invented a steel plow in 1837 that allowed less frequent cleanings than the old iron or wood plows to which thick soil would stick. He manufactured his plows before putting them up for sale so farmers would not have to wait for one to be built.
Agricultural implements were the mainstay of the company but they also made a few bicycles in the 1890s.
After briefly experimenting with building their own tractors they purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company in 1918, which manufactured the popular Waterloo Boy tractor at its facilities in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1923 they started manufacturing tractors under the John Deere name starting with the Model D. They continue to build most of their tractors in Waterloo, Iowa (USA).
The tractor shown in this photograph appears to be a John Deere A model from 1950. The A model was built from 1947-1952 as a 2 wheel drive row tractor in their Waterloo, Iowa (USA) facility.
