Description
Andrew College Circular Tower by Kathy K. McClellan is a photographic image created for Day 186 of the 365 Challenge (Journal 2022).
This enclosed, circular tower is located on the corner of the Old Main building at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia (USA). The building was designed by prominent Atlanta architect William H. Parkins and constructed in 1892 after fire destroyed the original college building.
The Old Main building is a five story structure although only four stories of the tower have windows. Building materials include both brick and wood with multiple architectural elements.
Transom windows on the second and third floor contain stained glass, adding another visual element.
Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia (USA) was founded in 1854 and is the second oldest charter in the United States giving an educational institution the right to confer degrees upon women. It was originally called Andrew Female College.
It is a private liberal arts college that is associated with The United Methodist Church.
The campus has an interesting history. It served as Hood Hospital during the American Civil War. A fire consumed the campus in 1892 and with money raised by the people of Cuthbert rebuilding began the same year with the college reopening in the fall in a building now known as Old Main.
In 1917 Andrew became a Junior College offering Associate Degrees. The college became co-educational in 1956. In 2018 the college began offering two four year degrees and additional baccalaureate degrees are being developed.
