Description
Southall Drugs Building Florence Alabama by Kathy K. McClellan is a photograph taken in downtown Florence during the 2020 Pandemic Lockdown.
The Southall Building in downtown Florence, Alabama is located on the corner of Court and Mobile Streets. The Italianate style building was owned by Charles Morton Southall and constructed in 1900 for his wholesale and retail drug business. Charles Hester of New York City was responsible for the elegant interior featuring the area's first rubber tile floor.
Besides drugs many items were sold such as window glass, paints, seeds musical instruments among other sundries.
The pharmacy remained open until 1979. The Southall family and Byron Bower renovated the building in 1982 for combined commercial and residential use. John Mott, AIA, Ft. Smith Arkansas was the architect.
In 1980 the Southall building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
